Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Maggie is a 4 year old Catahoula, Lab and Pit Mix. I've had her since she was 8 weeks old. She has basic obedience training and has had private lessons. It's unfortunate that I have to find another home for her, but current situation does not allow me to keep her and I need to find a good home that understands herding dogs. Maggie has environmental allergies that are kept under control with OTC Benadryl twice a day. She also has separation anxiety when you leave the house and is currently on meds for this. She could be taken off these meds if someone was home most of the day. She is crate trained and is very loving with both males ... (Read More)and females. She would do best as the only dog, but did live with a female submissive boxer that worked out. Due to being a herding dog, home with cats are not recommended. Children over 10 years old would be good if they have an understanding of dogs, but no small children. Maggie will come with everything I have for her and documents of all her vet paperwork. (Less)

Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered

North is a gorgeous young adult Catahoula Leopard/Pit Bull mix. He's friendly with people but a bit overwhelming in his play style with other dogs, so would do best as an only dog in a home with fit adults. North is a bundle of energy and loves to play ball, but teaching him ways to burn off that energy through less stimulating but just as exciting ways would be good for him. If you have an active lifestyle and would like to have a dog that can keep up with you, please come meet North!

Rescue Me ID: 14-03-09-00382Amelie & Bubba (female)

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Amelie: She was a rescue during the winter following the storm, Katrina. We were contacted and told us that there were so many Catahoulas as well as other dogs being displaced because of the storm. We believe Amelie was born shortly after the storm, but was lost and injured. She ended-up at a rescue in Fresno. She had almost been put down due to a severe hip injury, but shelter and rescue workers just couldn't do due to her sweet, good nature and beauty, they believed she would most assuredly find a home. A woman running a rescue took her on and cared for post-surgery and we eventually found her at a rescue in Fresno when she was a bout 6 ... (Read More)months old. She was/is absolutely adorable and sweet. She potty trained like a champ and she was/is just so eager to please when it comes to following house rules and taking care of her brother, Astaroth (we call him Bubba) and her family. She is a Catahoula, though she does not have any papers. She is black, brown, taupe spotted and patched. Her eyes are brown and she is about 70 lbs. Astaroth (Bubba) Bubba is another Catahoula rescue that came from Wisconsin from a family and their dogs that were displaced after the storm. We were so enamored with Amelie and our experience with her had been so positive that we decided we wanted to get another dog to be her sibling and keep her company when we went to work. Bubba had a number of issues that Amelie did not have. He was afraid of his own shadow and would cry and howl and yelp when Amelie or we left his side to do things we had to do (go to the bathroom, get food, etc.). He was afraid of his own shadow, so-to-speak, and was extremely sensitive to any kind of change in his physical environment. However, he is extremely intelligent and was/is super quick to learn 'tricks', commands, etc. His potty training was successful, but because he was so afraid to leave his sister or us he would go in the house if there was no one to take him outside. When we moved, this ceased to be an issue, because the backyard was easily accessible without having to go around the corner and down the stairs; he could just walk out the back door and could still see in the house, so that seemed to solve the problem. He is super sweet and loves to cuddle and sleep under the covers. He has to sleep with someone or in his crate or he will cry all night and be super stressed (he just needs to feel secure). I truly believe he has a form of autism. He is about 65 lbs and is a butterscotch color with brindley markings. He has one brown eye and one broken blue eye. Setbacks: Both dogs were raised going to dog park and dog beach%BD'%BD| and I don't mean once in a while, they went a lot, sometimes twice a day. They were highly socialized and got along with dogs of all sizes and temperaments. One day, however, just outside the house, they were off leash and ran up to a couple of dogs (that happened to be pit bulls, although I think it could have happened with any breed) to say hi. I have replayed this day countless times in my head and I would give almost anything to be able to go back and change the variables in that situation. The dogs on leash were very defensive and attacked and it was brutal and traumatic. Amelie and Bubba had large deep puncture wounds and you could tell they were scared and in shock. They required frequent changes of bandages and wound care that I'm sure traumatized them even more. Since this time, their attitude toward other dogs changed. We tried taking them to the park a couple of times, but they were highly sensitive and defensive and would get into altercations with other dogs that were only trying to play. Amelie became extremely protective of Bubba, and if he even whimpered at being chased, she would be on the dog in an instant which would then set Bubba off. This is tragic, because they are active dogs and really loved going to the park and the beach, running around and playing together and with other dogs. Even on leash, they are really high-strung, nervous and defensive when they see another dog even if that other dog is behind a fence or across the street. I do sincerely believe, however, that if they were integrated into a larger pack, they would not be aggressive toward those dogs. Bubba loves to play fetch and both dogs love hanging out in the yard together and with their humans. They know verbal and non-verbal, hand-sign commands for sit, lie down, stay, turn around and shake. They are very protective of each other, the family and the property and yet have never attacked any person or even shown any aggression toward humans that were invited into our home. They are good dogs that are super loyal and they definitely deserve better than the pound. My wish for them and I would give this to them if I could afford it, would be for them to live with a pack of dogs on a ranch with lots of room to run and be active. (Less)

Catahoula    Age: Young Adult

Sunny and Balou are brothers that I picked up from the local animal control so they wouldn't get put down, at about six months of age who knows where they where before. Shots all up to date, micro-chipped, neutered, they know basic commands such as: sit, lay, wait/stay, and have been kennel trained, I have all the info to their micro-chips... I do recommend that they go together but they can be separated. Everyone has to remember that these dogs were bred for hunting wild bore! They can get mouthy! I will not charge an adoption fee, unless we have to travel to drop them off, and I ask that you fill out an adoption contract...

PIease Read Before Adopting a Catahoula in California
Catahoula Dogs can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. The Catahoula, or Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog, is an intelligent, loyal, and territorial breed. Catahoulas are affectionate with their own families but intolerant of strangers. Catahoulas need a lot of time and attention from their owners and are best matched with people who have experience training intelligent dogs. A Catahoula that is left alone and ignored may become aggressive or destructive. Early socialization is imperative, especially with children. Catahoulas are very physical and need a lot of exercise. Some can adapt to apartment life while others cannot; the safest bet is a home with a large fenced yard or open land.

lnteresting Catahoula Trivia Low-Cost California Spay & Neuter Clinics
Catahoulas only need to be bathed about twice a year. Vikings would have brought Catahoulas' ancestors to the New World hundreds of years before the Spanish arrived. Teams of Catahoulas were once used to control feral pigs.
