Rescue Me ID: 14-09-13-00385Skippy Girl (female)

Catahoula Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

They call me Skippy Girl! My friends at the dog park always talk about how awesome their families are. I love my foster mom, but I really want my very own people. The first thing to know is that I am an affectionate girl that needs an owner that likes to stay busy. I have long legs and I like to keep them moving. I'd be an excellent running partner or really your take-along dog on all of your adventures. I like to lounge too, but after a bit of exercise and with a yummy chew toy. I am a bigger girl, weighing in at nearly 65 pounds, but I have manners, so I am not 65 pounds of bull-in-a-china cabinet. I am also 65 pounds of beautiful with my ... (Read More)leg freckles, a short red, orange and white coat and my BEST features are my amber eyes and my permanent eyeliner. My tail is also an attention getter....wags constantly unless I am concentrating and then it will be curled up over my back. Okay, so we covered my looks...let's talk about my personality a little bit. I am very affectionate and I really love to spend time with all kinds of people and other pups. Getting hugs and kisses and a daily tummy rub will make my day! When I am at an adoption event, I do this really funny thing where I lean into the crate so you can pet my whole body without having to stick your hands through the holes. This is one of those smart tricks I have learned! I also know how to sit, shake paws and several other cool tricks. I bet I can learn any trick you throw my way. I love to stay busy and have fun, so an active family would be great for me. I am a good jogger, hiker, dog park participant and walker because I am super social. I'm not too social with cats, so I need to be adopted by a family that does not have one. I do not live with children, but I see them at the park and they are great back scratchers so having them around would be just fine. I would do well in any family dynamic because I am really adaptable to all situations. After all of this talk about myself, I am hopeful that you will decide to love me for the rest of my life. I have got many more years to share with someone special, so let's meet. I am healthy, spayed, current on my vaccinations, house trained and do not forget...beautiful and smart. If you are interested in adopting Skippy Girl, please fill out our online adoption application at www.CorridorRescue.org Skippy Girl currently lives in Houston, Texas and is on the network for Denver because we have several amazing volunteers that live here who help coordinate successful out-of-state adoptions. Corridor Rescue has the very fortunate ability to transport dogs to other states via the United Airlines PetSafe program. We have worked out a very cost-effective way to transport these lucky dogs to their new homes. The transport cost is $225, which includes the airline flight, a new pet travel kennel that you can keep upon arrival and the required health documents from the veterinarian. The adoption fee is $150 for all of our dogs. The grand total cost for adopting this pet including transportation to Denver Int'l Airport is $375.     This wonderful little girl was rescued through Rez Dawg Rescue (www.rezdawgsrescue.org) from a high kill shelter in Gallup, NM. She is around 20-25 lbs, fully vetted (spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and dewormed), and living in foster care. She is doing well with potty training and gets along with other dogs. I think she would prefer a house that does not have children currently but could be good with them one day. She was said to be very shy and timid by shelter staff but once I approached her slowly and gave her 5 minutes to get used to me, she was licking my face, asking for pats and following me everywhere. She has not been seen to be ... (Read More)destructive at all, a great little girl! She is smaller than a Catahoula but bigger than a dachshund, has the Catahoula build (so hopefully less likely to have back problems, can jump like one too) but has a dachshund face. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Catahoula in Colorado
Catahoula Dogs can make good pets in Colorado if they match your IifestyIe. The Catahoula, or Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog, is an intelligent, loyal, and territorial breed. Catahoulas are affectionate with their own families but intolerant of strangers. Catahoulas need a lot of time and attention from their owners and are best matched with people who have experience training intelligent dogs. A Catahoula that is left alone and ignored may become aggressive or destructive. Early socialization is imperative, especially with children. Catahoulas are very physical and need a lot of exercise. Some can adapt to apartment life while others cannot; the safest bet is a home with a large fenced yard or open land.

Catahoulas only need to be bathed about twice a year. Catahoulas are probably descended from the Nordic Wolfhound. Vikings would have brought Catahoulas' ancestors to the New World hundreds of years before the Spanish arrived. Teams of Catahoulas were once used to control feral pigs.
