Rescue Me ID: 16-11-26-00317Smokey Joe (male)

Catahoula Mix    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Very Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

https://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/26506831 Video at Petfinder link. Smokey Joe is a Home for the Holidays dog as he has waited 3 1/2 years for a home. Smokey Joe spends 22 hours a day inside a run looking out at the world and waiting for the 2 hours of freedom in the play yards if weather is good. This has been his world for 3 1/2 years. In this season of Christmas miracles, we have great hopes that Smokey Joe will be chosen to have a home and end his long wait to have love in his life. Smokey Joe is sponsored with a subsidized fee of $25. Tagged as Special Needs only because of being in shelter care over one year. Joe (age 5yrs) has ... (Read More)waited the longest of all our dogs for the person(s) and home that has eluded him. He lives for the moments that a staff member can play with him or that a volunteer can walk him in the neighboring woods. When weather is good, he has 2 hours outside to run within the fenced play yard. The other 22 hours are spent in a kennel run, waiting...hoping...for the person who never comes. He initially came in as a tiny puppy, was adopted and returned fifteen months later in June 2013. He was returned because the other dog in the house continually attacked him. Joe came back to us with a fear of leashes that subsided with time and patience of each those who earned his trust. When he is with his favorite people, he wiggles with joy and one can see the glimpse of the younger Joe who believed in love and forever companionship. Joe is a strong dog weighing in at 77 lbs. An adult only household is being sought with an experienced dog person. Potential adopters are evaluated carefully as we know that there are a limited amount of people with the dog savvy experience required to share life with Joe. To date, we have not been able to find that person(s). Joe will be a loyal and protective companion who will give his life to defend the person he loves. A secure fenced yard is required for Joe. Joe was housetrained before relinquishment but unknown how quickly he will remember those skills. His friendliness towards cats in motion is unknown. Our Adoption Process Our adoption process begins with the submission of a Pre-Adoption Questionnaires (PAQ) which is used to gather information and initiate conversation with the adopting person/family. The form also assists us with assessing the environment for suitability and safety in the placement of our residents. The PAQ is the first step in the approval process, followed by veterinarian reference check, landlord approval confirmation if relevant and a home visit which may be done physically or virtually depending on the distance from the shelter. The approval process can be initiated before or after visiting our residents. The PAQ is located on our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/smithgallhumanesociety/photos/a.984873858223547.1073741865.548822128495391/984873884890211/?type=3&theater. There are separate forms for dogs and cats. Requirements for adoption are specific to the needs of the animal in addition to standard checks for safety issues. Adopters must come to the shelter once approved to take their adopted pet home. We do not ship nor do we transport. Submitting the form is neither a guarantee of adoption nor an entitlement to 'first come, first served' in the selection process of safely and appropriately placing our residents. Decision to approve/not approve an adopter is based on the needs of the dog, not the needs of the adopter. The completed form can be returned by emailing to: smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net or delivery to the shelter. The process usually takes 1 to 2 business days but can be slowed by not completing all of the questions, difficulty in reaching people relevant to approval and scheduling a home visit. Our residents must be returned to us at any point in time if the adoption is no longer suitable/safe for the pet or circumstances have changed to where a new home is needed. A contract must be signed to complete the adoption process. We will allow a temporary adoption period of up to two weeks to make the decision as to permanent adoption. Our Adoption Center is located at 4823 Helen Hwy (75N), Sautee GA 30571. Contact info: 706-865-4135, smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net. We are 4 miles south of the alpine town of Helen in the NE GA mountains. We are closed on Mondays. Operating hours are Tue-Sat 10-4 and Sun 1-4.     Sweet dog who, as a result of various adult/owner circumstances, has never had a loving owner who can and will spend time and give her the attention every pet deserves. My aging mother can no longer care for her, and having interacted with her on my last several visits (I live in Colorado), I simply cannot stand the thought of just dumping this sweet animal on the doorsteps of a shelter - even a no-kill shelter. While I truly believe she is a loving animal, I am not sure about her experience/behavior with other pets.

Rescue Me ID: 14-10-19-00408Hazel (female)

Catahoula Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hazel is a brilliant dazzle of color and is known as a 'Catahoula Bulldog', a mix between Catahoula Leopard and American Bulldog. Her extremely loving, laid back personality is all American Bulldog. Her silvery, black, and red streaks of unique brindle are all catahoula. She has it all, looks and personality. She is a tad overweight due to the fact she was abandoned and had to make do with donated scraps on the roadside until rescue found her. She does vow never to be hungry again and we see that she isn't. She gets along wonderful with large and small dogs, but insist they not eat her food. The foster home doesn't have cats, but she ... (Read More)is not a squirrel chaser. She mostly is just very gentle and loving. She is about 2 years old and has just finished her slow kill heart worm treatment and will be retested in a month. Hazel really just wants some love and attention. She does do well with her foster mom's grandchildren as well. If you have a little extra love and are able to give her some attention, she'd love to be your best friend. Please go to brantleyanimalrescuecoalition.weebly.com to fill out an adoption application if you would like to adopt Hazel. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Catahoula in Georgia
Catahoula Dogs can make good pets in Georgia if they match your IifestyIe. The Catahoula, or Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog, is an intelligent, loyal, and territorial breed. Catahoulas are affectionate with their own families but intolerant of strangers. Catahoulas need a lot of time and attention from their owners and are best matched with people who have experience training intelligent dogs. A Catahoula that is left alone and ignored may become aggressive or destructive. Early socialization is imperative, especially with children. Catahoulas are very physical and need a lot of exercise. Some can adapt to apartment life while others cannot; the safest bet is a home with a large fenced yard or open land.

Catahoulas only need to be bathed about twice a year. Vikings would have brought Catahoulas' ancestors to the New World hundreds of years before the Spanish arrived. Teams of Catahoulas were once used to control feral pigs. Catahoulas are especially well suited to boar hunting.
