Rescue Me ID: 18-05-03-00248Ghost (male)

Catahoula Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Ghost is about a year and a half old. He is a Catahoula mix. He is a sweet boy but very much still a puppy. He is housebroken but he does still chew - according to his prior family he would chew on anything including the kids toys and it wasn't fair to the kids. Our guess on part of that is lack of exercise - a tired dog is a good dog. A Catahoula has lots of energy and needs a way to get that energy out. He will need some training to learn what is acceptable to chew on and what is not. He is neutered and his shots are all current. He is also micro-chipped and ready to go home. He is at the shelter so he can have visitors. He is a ... (Read More)good sized boy at over 60 lbs. and is very strong. Seems to get along with everyone. Needs to be the only animal in the home. There is a possibility of another large dog in the home but would have to make sure prior to being adopted. High prey drive - no small animals. If you are interested in this boy, please go to our website and fill out an adoption application - you will find that at www.patriotsforpets.com His adoption fee will be $150.00. (Less)

Catahoula Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Rosie is probably a Catahoula mix. She is abouta year old. She was adopted from us as a tiny baby and was returned. Here is what the people who had her have to say about her: Housebroken (used to a fenced in back yard); Crate trained although won't always go in willingly (if you throw a treat she will). Knows sit, lay down, shake (will shake with either paw if you say 'other one'). Takes treats very nicely usually and trained not to take it until you say 'ok'. Doesn't woof down her food, kind of a grazer. Likes to play with toys very much and loves chewies/deer anglers/nylabones, etc. Gives very nice kisses but not a cuddler. Good in the ... (Read More)car. Good at the vet's office. Here was the reasons she was returned: She is very high energy. She is a digger. We have discovered since coming back into us that she needs to be the only dog in the house. She is available for adoption here at Patriots. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Catahoula in Iowa
Catahoula Dogs can make good pets in Iowa if they match your IifestyIe. The Catahoula, or Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog, is an intelligent, loyal, and territorial breed. Catahoulas are affectionate with their own families but intolerant of strangers. Catahoulas need a lot of time and attention from their owners and are best matched with people who have experience training intelligent dogs. A Catahoula that is left alone and ignored may become aggressive or destructive. Early socialization is imperative, especially with children. Catahoulas are very physical and need a lot of exercise. Some can adapt to apartment life while others cannot; the safest bet is a home with a large fenced yard or open land.

lnteresting Catahoula Trivia Low-Cost Iowa Spay & Neuter Clinics
Catahoulas only need to be bathed about twice a year. Vikings would have brought Catahoulas' ancestors to the New World hundreds of years before the Spanish arrived. Teams of Catahoulas were once used to control feral pigs. Catahoulas are especially well suited to boar hunting.
