Rescue Me ID: 17-10-16-00002Rufus (male)

Catahoula Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Rufus is a super sweet guy once he settles in and gets comfortable. He's been bounced around quite a bit in his life and it does take him a bit longer to open up and show his true personality but once he does you'll fall for him for sure. He's a fairly active guy that needs to go for his daily outing whether it be a nice walk, jog, bike ride, or hike. He's a good boy in the house but will let you know if he's not getting enough exercise (he'll pester you until you give in and bring him for a walk)he's quite the goof. He comes off as a tough guy but is really quite a mush and is super afraid of fireworks, gunshots in the distance, any loud ... (Read More)scary noises really (he seeks comfort and tends to be super clingy during thunderstorms).Did I mention he loves but scratches! He is good with most large dogs and is living with two foster sisters, he does seem like he maybe prefers males more but it really depends on the dog. Due his high hound prey drive he is not good with small dogs. The one big snag up he has the is causing him to be overlooked is he can be an escapee. This can be worked with and I think if he got the exercise and stimulation he craves it would help a ton. Working with a trainer would not only help you and him learn but it will also help the two of you bond. He's also good with kids but would be best with kids 8 and up because of his exuberance for life. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Catahoula in Massachusetts
Catahoula Dogs can make good pets in Massachusetts if they match your IifestyIe. The Catahoula, or Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog, is an intelligent, loyal, and territorial breed. Catahoulas are affectionate with their own families but intolerant of strangers. Catahoulas need a lot of time and attention from their owners and are best matched with people who have experience training intelligent dogs. A Catahoula that is left alone and ignored may become aggressive or destructive. Early socialization is imperative, especially with children. Catahoulas are very physical and need a lot of exercise. Some can adapt to apartment life while others cannot; the safest bet is a home with a large fenced yard or open land.
