Rescue Me ID: 14-12-09-00666  (female)

Catahoula Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Abused/Neglected

Penny is a 1 year old, Corgi, Catahoula, Beagle mix, spayed female. Good with other dogs, cats, and kids. About 35lbs. High energy so good for an active family or one committed to ensuring she gets daily exercise. Very sweet, loves affection and attention. Housebroken Crate-trained Penny was at the top of the kill list at a high high kill shelter Genessee County Animal Control. This facility uses the 'heart stick' means of euthanasia which is one of the most painful and torturous ways to go short of the gas chamber. Penny was at the top of the 'E' list because she had injuries to her ear and head area. It looked like she was attacked by ... (Read More)another dog. She had a large hematoma--blood-filled pocket--on her ear. She's undergone surgery for the hematoma, and her ear had to be removed. However, it doesn't make any difference to her and she's still as happy and playful as ever. It's a cosmetic thing and not something that will require additional vetting or maintenance by an adopter. Adopt A Pup Animal Rescue does not have a physical shelter location, all of our pets are in foster homes. To meet one of our animals, you will need to fill out an application. After your application is reviewed, one of our volunteers will contact you to set up a time for you to meet the pet. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Catahoula in Michigan
Catahoula Dogs can make good pets in Michigan if they match your IifestyIe. The Catahoula, or Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog, is an intelligent, loyal, and territorial breed. Catahoulas are affectionate with their own families but intolerant of strangers. Catahoulas need a lot of time and attention from their owners and are best matched with people who have experience training intelligent dogs. A Catahoula that is left alone and ignored may become aggressive or destructive. Early socialization is imperative, especially with children. Catahoulas are very physical and need a lot of exercise. Some can adapt to apartment life while others cannot; the safest bet is a home with a large fenced yard or open land.

Catahoulas only need to be bathed about twice a year. Catahoulas are probably descended from the Nordic Wolfhound. Vikings would have brought Catahoulas' ancestors to the New World hundreds of years before the Spanish arrived.
