Rescue Me ID: 17-04-09-00401Ronin (male)

Catahoula    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Deaf

Gorgeous Ronin was dropped off alongside Nook, our heartworm positive white shepherd. This boy is the product of double merle breeding - when an irresponsible breeder mates two merle dogs there a recessive condition emerges in a few pups that can result in hearing and/or vision impairments. Ronin is deaf, but he doesn't let that slow him down one bit. Ronin is a 1-2 year old happy boy that will need a fenced in yard so that he has a safe area to play. He will not be available until May. Please email barkingbackrescue@gmail.com for an app! Ronin is great with other dogs, but has NOT been cat or kid tested.

Rescue Me ID: 17-04-09-00002Kylie (female)

Catahoula Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Kylie was born on the same property as Holly on 9/13/16 - why another one, we are not really sure - we are just grateful that they were willing to relinquish her to rescue as well. This is a family that could really care less about having dogs - all of them were left in the yard, hipbones protruding and covered in ticks. They finally opted to release them to rescue, and we now have Holly and Kylie! Kylie doesn't have a care in the world - she gets along with dogs, cats, farm animals, you name it. She adores her crate and is totally housebroke. She will not be adoptable until mid-May, but we will start taking apps on her now.

Rescue Me ID: 17-04-09-00001Holly (female)

Catahoula Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Sweet Holly was born two days before Christmas in 2015. She spent the next year living with a family that could really care less about having dogs - all of them were left in the yard, hipbones protruding and covered in ticks. They finally opted to release them to rescue, and we now have Holly and Kylie! Holly couldn't be sweeter. She's very mild mannered, will play with the other dogs but would prefer to have some human attention or a good toy. She is cat friendly as well. Holly is around 55lbs and just over a year old. She will not be adoptable until mid-May, but we will start taking apps on her now.

Rescue Me ID: 17-04-04-00650Coffee (female)

Catahoula Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Coffee wants to be your girl. She is a victim of neglect, and spent her first seven months of life on a chain with no human interaction. The kind lady that took her off that chain taught her that humans are good and couches are pretty good too. But Coffee is still a little nervous, and would like to have a dog sibling to watch and learn from. She is good with dog-savvy cats, loves other dogs, great with kids and adores people. She's still a little afraid of loud noises, but with a loving home she will soon completely forget her past. Coffee is around eight months old and 35lbs, she will stay medium-sized.

Rescue Me ID: 17-04-04-00141Echo (male)

Catahoula    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Needs to be Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Deaf

Echo is an adorable Catahoula pup that found himself at a high kill shelter likely due to the fact that he is deaf. When two merle catahoulas have puppies, there are often double merle pups and they are prone to hearing and/or vision loss. While we initially thought Echo was totally deaf, he does seem to hear certain noises. Echo is around three months old. Homes with a fence preferred for his safety but will consider experienced apps without.

Smiling Ace!! Ace is a good happy boy. He's unfortunately the product of breeding two merle catahoulas together, resulting in his deafness. Ace is around 2-3 years old.

Rescue Me ID: 17-01-25-00560Beth (female)

Catahoula    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Beth is the product of bad Catahoula breeding practices. Greedy breeders cross two merle dogs resulting in occasional 'double merle' puppies. This little darling is partially blind, but that doesn't slow her down one bit. She loves to play, go for car rides and snuggle. We do require that adopters have a fenced yard and no very young children.

PIease Read Before Adopting a Catahoula in New York
Catahoula Dogs can make good pets in New York if they match your IifestyIe. The Catahoula, or Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog, is an intelligent, loyal, and territorial breed. Catahoulas are affectionate with their own families but intolerant of strangers. Catahoulas need a lot of time and attention from their owners and are best matched with people who have experience training intelligent dogs. A Catahoula that is left alone and ignored may become aggressive or destructive. Early socialization is imperative, especially with children. Catahoulas are very physical and need a lot of exercise. Some can adapt to apartment life while others cannot; the safest bet is a home with a large fenced yard or open land.

lnteresting Catahoula Trivia Low-Cost New York Spay & Neuter Clinics
Catahoulas only need to be bathed about twice a year. Catahoulas are probably descended from the Nordic Wolfhound. Vikings would have brought Catahoulas' ancestors to the New World hundreds of years before the Spanish arrived.
