She fostered with dogs of all shapes and sizes and several kids, and does wonderful. She may not do well with cats, as she has demonstrated a high prey drive but has not been officially cat tested. Catahoula Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

How such a gentle, laid back soul like SkeeZicks with one blue eye got overlooked at a shelter is beyond me - but he was a last minute save. The shelter staff loved him so much that they teared up when's they got to watch him walk out of the building on what was supposed to be his last day. The staff named him SkeeZicks, a term from days gone by that was affectionately used to call children 'rascals', and it's just so funny that we had to keep it! SkeeZicks is good with everyone and everything. He'll try to play and keep up with the younger members of the household, but is always first back at his foster mom's side. He lives to be petted ... (Read More)and praised. He's around 55lbs, so nearing large dog size and at best guess 2-3 years old. Please email barkingbackrescue@gmail,com for an app! (Less)

Once he was caught and taken t othe vet for treatment, we were stunned at how fast his transformation began! Within 48 hours he was snuggling on the couch with the fosters kids and wrestling with the household dogs. Within a week he was walking on a leash like a pro and totally housebroke! We don't know who dumped this wonderful boy or why on earth anyone would, we just know that that will never ever happen to him again! Reed is around 8 months old and 50lbs. He will be available for adoption in September, once he has finished his antibiotics and has a totally clean bill of health! Please email barkingbackrescue@gmail.com for an app! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 17-07-29-00218Hawkeye (male)

Catahoula    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

These beautiful boys were found wandering alone and starving along a country road in Louisiana. A kind Samaritan took them in and reached out to rescues. They are just stunning, They remained with our foster for about a month and are now healthy and happy boys and have the vet's seal of good health. Hawkeye is an absolute gem. How he could have ever been dumped is beyond my comprehension. I've never had a 'teenage' dog be so good with my young daughter - doesn't jump or claw - and she just adores him. He comes when he's called, is good on a leash (so good a five year old can walk him), and is housebroke. He loves to snuggle and give ...     Finn is a gorgeous adult male houla in need of his forever home. He was unfortunately placed in an apartment by another rescue, and with lack of exercise became an unhappy guy! Finn, like most catahoulas, needs to be kept both physically and mentally active. He is doing very well in his foster home - loving the yard, the pool, the other dogs, and the kids! Finn is around four years old, and fully vetted and housebroke. Please email barkingbackrescue@gmail.com for an app!

Rescue Me ID: 17-04-09-00401Ronin (male)

Catahoula Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Deaf

Gorgeous Ronin was dropped off alongside Nook, our heartworm positive white shepherd. This boy is the product of double merle breeding - when an irresponsible breeder mates two merle dogs there a recessive condition emerges in a few pups that can result in hearing and/or vision impairments. Ronin is deaf, but he doesn't let that slow him down one bit. Ronin is a 1-2 year old happy boy that will need a fenced in yard so that he has a safe area to play. He will not be available until May. Please email barkingbackrescue@gmail.com for an app! Ronin is great with other dogs, but has NOT been cat or kid tested.

Rescue Me ID: 17-04-03-00098Rita (female)

Catahoula Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Rita, cannot understand why she hasn't found her own home yet! Don't get her wrong, she loves being fostered with her sister Coffee, but it is time to spread her wings!! Rita is a sweet snuggly girl that would love to have her very own home. This baby was tied behind a barn for the first 7 months of her life along with her sister and parents. The parents were used to hunt. The girls were too sweet for that, so the owner was trying to give them away to anyone who would take them (probably would've ended up as dog fight bait). When they first arrived at foster they were scared of their own shadow, not knowing anything about the world, but they ... (Read More)have really blossomed. Rita is still shy with new people and when we're at the dog park, she will sneak up to take a sniff on her own terms. She LOVES people and LOVES attention, but she still is unsure. Once she's made a home her own, all that burns away and she becomes quite comfortable. With the right family she will learn to feel that way when she's out and about as well. She loves going for rides and loves hiking and dog parks. She will snuggle up to you at night and watch a movie and snooze. Please email barkingbackresuce@gmail.com for an application to give this lovely girl a home! (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Catahoula in New York
Catahoula Dogs can make good pets in New York if they match your IifestyIe. The Catahoula, or Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog, is an intelligent, loyal, and territorial breed. Catahoulas are affectionate with their own families but intolerant of strangers. Catahoulas need a lot of time and attention from their owners and are best matched with people who have experience training intelligent dogs. A Catahoula that is left alone and ignored may become aggressive or destructive. Early socialization is imperative, especially with children. Catahoulas are very physical and need a lot of exercise. Some can adapt to apartment life while others cannot; the safest bet is a home with a large fenced yard or open land.

Catahoulas only need to be bathed about twice a year. Vikings would have brought Catahoulas' ancestors to the New World hundreds of years before the Spanish arrived. Teams of Catahoulas were once used to control feral pigs.
