Rescue Me ID: 18-04-08-00338Mason (male)

Catahoula Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Mason came to us as a stray in December. It took us over a week to be able to pet him. At first he was very leery of us but over a few weeks he became friendly. I have 4 children and after we took him to the pound to be quarantined to be sure he was rabies free, we had him fixed and formally adopted him. We successfully trained him on a wireless fence but he has become increasingly protective and aggressive. He is very leery of strangers. He bit the mailman on the foot when he delivered a package. He has bitten 3 out of 4 of my children barely breaking the skin. The other day he bit a little neighbor that comes over all the time and has been ... (Read More)very kind to the dog. He bit him in the face leaving 2 puncture wounds between the nose and eye. Thankfully the neighbors parents were kind about it but we cannot keep the dog. We are desperately trying to find adults to take him that are comfortable working with dogs that can be aggressive. After reading the description on here it may be a breed specific behavior. We thought maybe he had been abused prior to coming to us. We wanted to keep him but simply cannot risk him hurting any other children. He is a sweet dog to me and my husband, and he does well with my oldest 2 kids but not the smaller ones. I do not want to take him to the pound as he would probably never be adopted after biting, and he is a large dog. He is a sweet dog though who loves to play and I think with the right training he could be wonderful. He seems to get along well with other dogs. We do not want to have him euthanized but I think this would be more humane than living at the pound. We will have to do something as it's just not safe for kids to be around him and we have many neighborhood children that come over to play. He has to stay in the basement for now when any children come over. Please help if you can. Thank you! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 18-03-02-00575Blossom (female)

Catahoula Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Very High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Needs to be Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Three months ago, I rescued Blossom from a negligent owner who wasn't feeding or caring for her. However, she's a bit too big and exuberant for me to handle. I live alone and am a senior citizen. She's about 9 or 10 months old, well over 40 pounds and a powerful dog. She needs an active family who have a fenced-in yard, love the outdoors and who are experienced with such a high-spirited dog. My yard isn't fenced and she loves ito play outside. I don't want to chance her getting hurt or killed. My house isn't very big so there's not a great deal of room for her to play inside She likes to fetch sticks, play tug-of-war and she can leap ... (Read More)pretty high. he also likes to jump up on you. She's funny and very affectionate. She is also housebroken and crate-trained. In fact, I will give her crate to the new owners as well.     Meet Pike! Age: Est 2 years Breed: catahoula mix Size: est 60lbs Pike was a shelter favorite...which would explain why he lived at one for several months before his time was truly up and he needed a place to go or face being euthanized. Pike is deaf and heartworm positive, which would explain why he had very little to no interest of being adopted/rescued. When we learned of Pike, we couldn't sit back and watch this sweet boy die. Pike is handsome and has a wonderful personality to boot. He knows some sign language, and given the time and training, he would make someone the perfect companion. Pike loves other dogs and is very playful! Pike ... (Read More)will go home with a years worth of heartworm prevention. No fee to an approved family. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Catahoula in South Carolina
Catahoula Dogs can make good pets in South Carolina if they match your IifestyIe. The Catahoula, or Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog, is an intelligent, loyal, and territorial breed. Catahoulas are affectionate with their own families but intolerant of strangers. Catahoulas need a lot of time and attention from their owners and are best matched with people who have experience training intelligent dogs. A Catahoula that is left alone and ignored may become aggressive or destructive. Early socialization is imperative, especially with children. Catahoulas are very physical and need a lot of exercise. Some can adapt to apartment life while others cannot; the safest bet is a home with a large fenced yard or open land.

Catahoulas only need to be bathed about twice a year. Vikings would have brought Catahoulas' ancestors to the New World hundreds of years before the Spanish arrived. Teams of Catahoulas were once used to control feral pigs.
